RHETORICAL QUESTIONS OF CHANGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM BY WAEC AND MINISTRY OF EDUCATION by ODEDEYI Sunday

It is not news again that there is a change in secondary school curriculum by the ministry of education as this has been going on for about two years now but the latest development is the adoption of the new curriculum by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).
Here are some questions running through my mind as someone who has been in the educational sector for some years now.
(1) What development has the change in 6-3-3-4 system to 9-3-4 system done to our educational system rather than the fall in our education repeating itself like a re-occurring decimal?
(2) Has our higher institution of learning syllabus updated to fit in, into this newly introduced curriculum?                  more and possible solutions after this cut...

(3) If some new subjects such as plumbing, welding, building, sewing etc are introduced to the secondary school curriculum, then what is the purpose of establishing our vocational institutes? Does that indicate that our vocational institutes will soon go into extinction?
(4) Are all parameters such as tools manpower, conducive learning environment etc in place to make this new policy a success?
(5) Will it face the problem of underfunding like other introduced policy in the country?
(6) Hope its purpose of establishment will not be defeated by teaching students theoretical aspects rather than the practical, like we have in our universities of technology and universities of agriculture who lost focus and becomes a conventional university.
(7) Is the introduction of some these subjects not a duplication effort as some of the subjects are integral parts of the pre-existing subjects?

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
followings are the suggested solutions to the problem raised.
(1) Instead of introducing subjects that have almost the same content with the pre-existing subject, I will suggest that the former subject scheme should be review so that the new topics desired can be integrated.
(2)The issue of exempting some so call technology from chemistry class should be abolished as they need the basic knowledge of this subject in their field of study. More so, some student should not be left out of BIOLOGY class because Biology is a subject which teaches human health and the students need to brighten their horizon on issues concerning their health.
(3) Subject like INFOTECH can still be introduced considering the fact that we are in age of advanced technology.
(4)The junior secondary school certificate examination should be taking seriously so that students who have the intention of taking up vocation in welding, sewing, Auto -mechanics, building, etc can proceed to vocational /technical schools to acquire both practical and theoretical knowledge. This should also be reinforced with basic manpower, tools, machines and other necessary infrastructures. This might abolished the use of road side technicians who lack the basic knowledge and principles of these vocations.
(5) After the completion of this study in vocation which may last for 4 to 5 years, government can give a financial grant to as many of the concern students who wish to start up a personal vocation while those that wish to work in private companies can be employed as certified technicians.
(6)At least each state should have a functioning federal and state vocational/technical school at subsidized fee; even this will serve as a way of de-congesting our universities and polytechnics.
REMEMBER THAT THE PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHING THESE VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL SCHOOLS CANNOT BE DEFEATED ONLY IF THE GRADUATES OF THESE SCHOOLS ARE ISSUED A RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATE AND ARE NOT TREATED LIKE UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE IN THE LABOUR MARKET ELSE THE ISSUE OF OUR CONGESTED POLYTECHNICS AND UNIVERSITIES WILL CONTINUE TO REPEAT ITSELF LIKE A RE-OCCURRING DECIMAL
